Pink River Dolphin of the Amazon, one of the few freshwater species in the world
With luck and patience, you may see them swimming, leaping, and playing near the boat. Discover one of the most magical and iconic creatures of the Amazon: the pink river dolphin (Inia geoffrensis). Unique in the world, this freshwater dolphin is not only a natural wonder, but also a symbol of the mystery and beauty of the rainforest.
Its pink coloration, which becomes more intense when they are active or excited, is believed- according to one theory - to be due to visible blood vessels beneath their very thin skin. And yes, if you are lucky, you may see them jumping and playing near the boat, with their distinctive upward-curved snout, as if they are always smiling.
These majestic dolphins can reach up to 2.5 meters in length. Although they are not the fastest swimmers, their flexible bodies allow them to glide agilely among trees and roots during the river’s flood season.
Observing a pink dolphin in its natural habitat is an unforgettable experience. Come to Heliconia Lodge and experience this magical encounter in the heart of the Amazon.
