Witness the Meeting of Waters

Confluence of the Nanay and Amazon Rivers

Experience the natural phenomenon where two mighty rivers meet. The confluence of the Amazon River and the Nanay River is a striking point where contrasting waters flow side by side — often referred to locally as the “Serpentine Union of the Waters.”

The Nanay River is a Peruvian tributary of the Amazon that flows through the Amazonian region of Loreto. Stretching approximately 315 km (196 miles), it runs along the left bank of the Amazon between the Tigre and Napo rivers. Together with the Itaya River, it surrounds the jungle city of Iquitos, effectively turning it into an island.

Nearby riverside communities along the Nanay include Santo Tomás, Padre Cocha, and Santa Clara.

During the low-water season, the many sandy beaches along the Nanay become popular local destinations. The river flows entirely through lowland terrain and is highly meandering, with a slow current. It branches into numerous caños - natural side channels that help distribute excess water - and into chains of lagoons that flood the surrounding plains on both banks.

Its main tributary, near Santa María de Nanay, is the Pintuyacu River, which itself receives waters from the Chambira River. The Momón River also flows into the Nanay.

Are you ready to witness this remarkable meeting of waters and become part of one of the Amazon’s most fascinating natural spectacles?
